Andrey Kosogov

Andrey Kosogov is a Russian businessman and manager, and a shareholder of Alfa Group. Between 1999 and 2005, Mr. Kosogov served as Vice President of Alfa-Bank and headed its investment department. Under his leadership, the bank made many successful deals to buy and sell various assets, including media holdings.
I have never owned villas, residences, airplanes or yachts. I have, however, traveled halfway around the world...

Biography

Early years

(childhood and education)

1961
Andrey Nikolaevich Kosogov was born on March 15, 1961 in the town of Sillamäe, Estonian SSR.
1981
Kosogov enrolled in the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI), where he specialized in nuclear power plants. During his studies, he was one of ten Lenin Scholars at MPEI. He was awarded the Medal of Success for his outstanding work at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow in 1985, and the Medal of Labor Valor from USSR Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko in 1986.
1987
Andrey graduated magna cum laude from the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) with a specialty in thermal physics. He then enrolled in postgraduate studies. At the same time, Kosogov was elected Secretary of the Komsomol Committee of the Institute, becoming one of its youngest leaders in the history of the MPEI.

Career

1990

After completing his postgraduate studies, Kosogov returned to the university faculty, where he worked for a year as a regular engineer. Together with his fellow professors, he opened the Center for Automation of Thermophysical Research (CATR), where he became the commercial director.

The company was involved in the supply of computers and equipment. The center is still in operation in 2024, producing measuring and computing systems, sensors and software.

1992

Andrey Kosogov joined Alfa Group on October 2, 1992, and on October 7, Russian President Boris Yeltsin issued a decree establishing a securities market as part of the privatization effort. In just a month and a half, Kosogov helped create a structure that has been operating effectively for more than 30 years. As of 2024, it is the only fund that has continued to operate since the time of privatization.

1996
Mr. Kosogov received an MBA degree from Harvard Business School (USA).
1997
Mr. Kosogov participated in one of Alfa Group's most successful deals — the acquisition of a 40% stake in Tyumen Oil Company (TNK).
1999
Alfa Capital merges with Alfa-Bank, Kosogov receives an option on Alfa Group and becomes a co-owner of Alfa-Bank. He was appointed First Deputy Chairman of the Board and Head of the Investment Block. During his tenure, he carried out a number of successful transactions, including the creation and sale of Alfa-Cement Holding and the reorganization and sale of Muz-TV.
2003
He founded AlfaStrakhovanie (Alfa Insurance) and became Chairman of its Board of Directors.
2004
Made Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alfa Telecom Holding (later Altimo), which merged the Group's telecommunications assets.
2005
Leaves the position of First Vice President of Alfa-Bank and joins Alfa Asset Management, which merged Alfa Capital Management and Alfa Capital Partners. In the same year he became Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Alfa-Bank Ukraine.
2013
Joined the Board of Directors of LetterOne investment holding company.
2022
Resigned from all positions in LetterOne. In the same year, he increased his stake in Alfa-Bank to 41%, becoming its largest single shareholder.

Today

Andrey Kosogov is the largest shareholder of Alfa-Bank. He is also involved in private charity work. He regularly travels with like-minded people to remote places above the Arctic Circle. He is interested in astrophysics and collects paintings. Kosogov is also involved in sports including hockey, running and «physical training using his own system».

Interview

Andrey Kosogov, a member of the Supervisory Board of the Alfa Group Consortium and a graduate of MPEI, spoke about his experience in the student teams of the MPEI National Research University and the future of the movement, and also answered the question of whether today’s youth should join the movement and work in squads.

Active in private philanthropy, Andrey Kosogov has supported a hospital for children with central nervous system disorders since 1996.
Helping scientists
Established and continues to sponsor a program to support elderly Russian scientists.
Restoring a temple
Together with cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, Kosogov rebuilt a temple at the site of Yuri Gagarin's death.
